LCO INSTRUCTIONS

Instructions for gathering, processing and analysing data for the HOYS / Las Cumbres Observatory project.

Taking images with the LCO telescopes

The following video takes you through the process of creating a user account on the LCO observing portal and submitting an observation request.  Download the instructions as a PDF »

Processing LCO data on the HOYS server

The following video takes you through the steps to process the data you took on the LCO telescopes on the HOYS server. Download the instructions as a PDF »

Analysing lightcurves

The following video takes you through the steps to view lightcurves on the HOYS server for images taken with the LCO telescopes as well as all the other data in the database. Download the instructions as a PDF »

Interesting lightcurves

Here are some of the interesting stars mentioned in the video – plus others that you can look at. We encourage you to find your own interesting objects using SIMBAD in the way described in the video to see what you can find in the data. We would also love you to write short articles or posts about your findings so that we can share them with the HOYS community.

Periodogram notebook for HOYS lightcurves

The following video shows you how to use a Periodogram to find periodic features in the light curves such as occultations of the star by material in the disk or star spots and accretion channels, rotating around the star. Download the slides as a PDF »

Downloading and uncompressing LCO files

This video shows you how to download and uncompress images files taken in the LCO project. You can then use the files to create a colour image or work with them in other ways.
