The plot above looks like the usual spot induced periodic light curve of a young star. But it is not 🙂 .
We show the light curve for the star BS Vel. It is actually a nearby star (distance 181pc) with a high proper motion. It just happens to be in our southern target field for Gaia19eyy. It is also classified as a UV Cet star, which means it has flares – but we do not have detected any.
It seems to be an old dwarf star of spectral type K3 (ish). The period of the light curve modulation is about 9 days. It probably is representing the rotation period of the star. If one looks along the light curve of the star, the modulation diminishes or even disappears for long periods, but shows up again – with the same period – but wit changed shape.
So we can use our data to learn about other objects than YSOs. In this case the rotation periods and spot evolution on a low mass star. Given the small distance and high proper motion, one could even try to measure these values from our data …. 😉
