This week we follow up the post from week number 122 (May 2021). We look at the object 2MASS08294005-4146097, which is a semi-regular variable. These are basically pulsating Supergiants (like Betelgeuse) that every now and again show up in the background of our HOYS fields.

This example shows very nice changes in brightness by up to 0.8mag in the Red filter. The typical time between maxima is about 60 to 70 days. But some are further apart and the amplitudes change. The maxima also change brightness and the typical variation between minima and maxima is only 0.4mag, i.e. about half the full range of brightness variability.

Note that there are are a number of outlying data points in the light curve, which will be removed after our additional data quality steps of the data which get done before any data is analysed in detail. The displayed light curve is straight from the database. In the future we plan to implement the full data quality control also on the website – a grant application to get someone to help with this has been submitted this week.
