In week 358 (November last year), we had a look at our first attempts of simulating phase folded light curves of spots on a (young) star. This week we have a very brief update on this.

We have created some realistic (same noise as HOYS) phase folded data (where we know the spot parameters, such as the size, position, and inclination of the star) and written a code that tries to find the best fitting model for it. The image above shows the ‘data’ as blue points and the fit as an orange line. The fitting works quite reliably (and fast) now, and our next task is to evaluate how accurately the real spot parameters can be fit, and how this depends on the noise in the data and the spot parameters itself.

After that, we need to expand the fitting to using multiple filters. This is essential to determine not just the spot size and location, but also the temperature. We will have another post when more progress on this has been made 🙂
